For “Why Girls Too Must Know the Steps,” a dance by Moya Devine and Barbara Roesch, I was called upon to portray Arthur Murray. I don’t know if I was the best choice for the role, but who is? This was in San Francisco, back in 1980.

“The Regard of Flight” at Lincoln Center

The Regard of Flight was produced at Lincoln Center in 1987. Since the Vivian Beaumont is classed as a Broadway house, this was officially my Broadway debut, as Mel Gussow noted in the New York Times (5/10/87).
An Evening in the Garden

I joined “Bob Berky and friends” for this romp through the sculpture garden of the Museum of Modern Art. I wrote a waltz for the occasion; the guards yelled at us for touching the sculptures.

This was my first foray into Forteana, reading selections from Charles Fort for the Virginia Matthews Dance Company, back in San Francisco in 1985. And lo, Janice Ross of the Oakland Tribune approved, even if she got Fort’s name wrong (2/11/85).
The Courtroom

The Courtroom never really got past the “work-in-progress” level, and Bill never revived it after its run in 1985. What an ensemble that was! It got mixed reviews, but The New Yorker was happy.
An Attractive Production

I put on An Attractive Production at Dance Theater Workshop in 1985. It was a busy year, and I was also moving back and forth between NYC and San Francisco. I’m surprised I got it on its feet at all. Still, it seems to have gone well.

Young Eddie and I got a nice mention in The New Yorker, for one of those club shows I was doing back in 1989.
The Oberlin Dance Collective in Sonoma

The Oberlin Dance Collective performed at Sonoma State College in 1977. I sang a couple of songs, and contributed a theater piece, “Hide Hide The Cow’s Outside.” And it looks as if I lettered the program, too.
Mostly Dance

Back in 1977, some of the members of the Oberlin Dance Collective, plus a few others, put on a show of work that didn’t quite fit into ODC. I contributed a program, an 8mm film collage, and artwork and deviled eggs for the lobby.
Murdock and the Regard of Flight

Those of you who enjoyed Bill Irwin’s show The Regard of Flight may be interested in this antique document. This was the first stirring of it, back in 1977 in San Francisco. At this point, it was only Bill and me, but Michael had a piece on the other half of the program. As usual, […]
