February 24th, 2012 · Comments Off on The Fun Song

Michael Smith and I used to open every performance of “Doug & Mike’s Adult Entertainment” with this little ditty.  Mike was on pocket trumpet, and I played banjo uke.  We also made a karaoke tape, now included on our DVD.

Filthy Song Night

December 29th, 2011 · 2 Comments

On December 17, 2011, I did my bit for the annual “Filthy Song Night,” at the Jalopy Theater in Brooklyn.  I brought out my baritone horn, which I seldom play in public, and offered a traditional variant of the hymn tune “Old 100th.”  You can listen to it here. In the ’90s, John Keel reprinted some of his article as booklets, under the rubric of the New York Fortean Society. This one was taken from a piece he wrote for the Journal of Popular Culture; I provided the cover illustration. John was particularly insistent that there be someone in a straitjacket.

A Fortean Album

July 10th, 2011 · Comments Off on A Fortean Album

While researching the life of the novelist and Fortean Tiffany Thayer, I came across an unfamiliar photo of Charles Fort. I passed it along to the Fortean Times, which inspired the art director, Etienne Gilfillan, to search for more. His discoveries were published in the March 2006 issue (#207). I provided captions, and an article […]
